Canto I. Ráma's Lament.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Those waving woods, that shine with bloom,
Open passage
Each varied tint in turn assume.
Open passage
Like labouring clouds they pour their showers
Open passage
In rain or ever-changing flowers.
Open passage
Behold, those forest trees, that stand
Open passage
High upon rock and table-land,
Open passage
As the cool gales their branches bend,
Open passage
Their floating blossoms downward send.
Open passage
See, Lakshmaṇ, how the breezes play
Open passage
With every floweret on the spray.
Open passage
And sport in merry guise with all
Open passage
The fallen blooms and those that fall.
Open passage
See, brother, where the merry breeze
Open passage
Shakes the gay boughs of flowery trees,
Open passage
Disturbed amid their toil a throng
Open passage
Of bees pursue him, loud in song.
Open passage
The Koïls,524 mad with sweet delight,
Open passage
The bending trees to dance invite;
Open passage
And in its joy the wild wind sings
Open passage
As from the mountain cave he springs.
Open passage
On speed the gales in rapid course,
Open passage
And bend the woods beneath their force,
Open passage
Till every branch and spray they bind
Open passage
In many a tangled knot entwined.
Open passage
What balmy sweets those gales dispense
Open passage
With cool and sacred influence!
Open passage
Fatigue and trouble vanish: such
Open passage
The magic of their gentle touch.
Open passage
Hark, when the gale the boughs has bent
Open passage
In woods of honey redolent,
Open passage
Through all their quivering sprays the trees
Open passage
Are vocal with the murmuring bees.
Open passage
The hills with towering summits rise,
Open passage
And with their beauty charm the eyes,
Open passage
Gay with the giant trees which bright
Open passage
With blossom spring from every height:
Open passage
And as the soft wind gently sways
Open passage
The clustering blooms that load the sprays,
Open passage
The very trees break forth and sing
Open passage
With startled wild bees' murmuring.
