Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
So resting on that rocky seat
Open passage
A while they spent in pastime sweet,
Open passage
Then onward neath the shady boughs
Open passage
Went Ráma with his Maithil spouse.
Open passage
She roaming in the forest shade
Open passage
Where every kind of creature strayed
Open passage
Observed a monkey wandering near,
Open passage
And clung to Ráma's arm in fear.
Open passage
The hero Ráma fondly laced
Open passage
His mighty arms around her waist,
Open passage
Consoled his beauty in her dread,
Open passage
And scared the Monkey till he fled.
Open passage
That holy mark of sanguine ore
Open passage
That gleamed on Sítá's brow before,
Open passage
Shone by that close embrace impressed
Open passage
Upon the hero's ample chest.
Open passage
Then Sítá, when the beast who led
Open passage
The monkey troop, afar had fled,
Open passage
Laughed loudly in light-hearted glee
Open passage
That mark on Ráma's chest to see.
Open passage
A clump of bright Aśokas fired
Open passage
The forest in their bloom attired:
Open passage
The restless blossoms as they gleamed
Open passage
A host of threatening monkeys seemed.
Open passage
Then Sítá thus to Ráma cried,
Open passage
As longingly the flowers she eyed:
Open passage
“Pride of thy race, now let us go
Open passage
Where those Aśoka blossoms grow.”
Open passage
He on his darling's pleasure bent
Open passage
With his fair goddess thither went
Open passage
And roamed delighted through the wood
Open passage
Where blossoming Aśokas stood,
Open passage
As Śiva with Queen Umá roves
Open passage
Through Himaván's majestic groves.
Open passage
Bright with purpureal glow the pair
Open passage
Of happy lovers sported there,
Open passage
And each upon the other set
Open passage
A flower-inwoven coronet.
Open passage
There many a crown and chain they wove
Open passage
Of blooms from that Aśoka grove,
