Canto XIX. Ráma's Promise.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
From death itself I would not fly
Open passage
My father's wish to gratify,
Open passage
What deed soe'er his loving son
Open passage
May do to please him, think it done.
Open passage
Amid all duties, Queen, I count
Open passage
This duty first and paramount,
Open passage
That sons, obedient, aye fulfil
Open passage
Their honoured fathers' word and will.
Open passage
Without his word, if thou decree,
Open passage
Forth to the forest will I flee,
Open passage
And there shall fourteen years be spent
Open passage
Mid lonely wilds in banishment.
Open passage
Methinks thou couldst not hope to find
Open passage
One spark of virtue in my mind,
Open passage
If thou, whose wish is still my lord,
Open passage
Hast for this grace the king implored.
Open passage
This day I go, but, ere we part,
Open passage
Must cheer my Sítá's tender heart,
Open passage
To my dear mother bid farewell;
Open passage
Then to the woods, a while to dwell.
Open passage
With thee, O Queen, the care must rest
Open passage
That Bharat hear his sire's behest,
Open passage
And guard the land with righteous sway,
Open passage
For such the law that lives for aye.”
Open passage
In speechless woe the father heard,
Open passage
Wept with loud cries, but spoke no word.
Open passage
Then Ráma touched his senseless feet,
Open passage
And hers, for honour most unmeet;
Open passage
Round both his circling steps he bent,
Open passage
Then from the bower the hero went.
Open passage
Soon as he reached the gate he found
Open passage
His dear companions gathered round.
Open passage
Behind him came Sumitrá's child
Open passage
With weeping eyes so sad and wild.
Open passage
Then saw he all that rich array
Open passage
Of vases for the glorious day.
Open passage
Round them with reverent stops he paced,
Open passage
Nor vailed his eye, nor moved in haste.
Open passage
The loss of empire could not dim
Open passage
The glory that encompassed him.
