Canto LVIII. Trisanku Cursed.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Triśanku's speech the hundred heard,
Open passage
And thus replied, to anger stirred:
Open passage
“Why foolish King, by him denied,
Open passage
Whose truthful lips have never lied,
Open passage
Dost thou transgress his prudent rule,
Open passage
And seek, for aid, another school?235
Open passage
Ikshváku's sons have aye relied
Open passage
Most surely on their holy guide:
Open passage
Then how dost thou, fond Monarch, dare
Open passage
Transgress the rule his lips declare?
Open passage
“Thy wish is vain,” the saint replied,
Open passage
And bade thee cast the plan aside.
Open passage
Then how can we, his sons, pretend
Open passage
In such a rite our aid to lend?
Open passage
O Monarch, of the childish heart,
Open passage
Home to thy royal town depart.
Open passage
That mighty saint, thy priest and guide,
Open passage
At noblest rites may well preside:
Open passage
The worlds for sacrifice combined
Open passage
A worthier priest could never find.”
Open passage
Such speech of theirs the monarch heard,
Open passage
Though rage distorted every word,
Open passage
And to the hermits made reply:
Open passage
“You, like your sire, my suit deny.
Open passage
For other aid I turn from you:
Open passage
So, rich in penance, Saints, adieu!”
Open passage
Vaśishṭha's children heard, and guessed
Open passage
His evil purpose scarce expressed,
Open passage
And cried, while rage their bosoms burned,
Open passage
“Be to a vile Chaṇḍála236 turned!”
Open passage
This said, with lofty thoughts inspired,
Open passage
Each to his own retreat retired.
Open passage
That night Triśanku underwent
Open passage
Sad change in shape and lineament.
Open passage
Next morn, an outcast swart of hue,
Open passage
His dusky cloth he round him drew.
Open passage
His hair had fallen from his head,
Open passage
And roughness o'er his skin was spread.
Open passage
Such wreaths adorned him as are found
Open passage
To flourish on the funeral ground.
