Open passage
But Ráma bade the chariot stay,
Open passage
And halting in his airy way,
Open passage
In Bharadvája's holy shade
Open passage
His homage to the hermit paid.
Open passage
“O saint,” he cried, “I yearn to know
Open passage
My dear Ayodhyá's weal and woe.
Open passage
O tell me that the people thrive,
Open passage
And that the queens are yet alive.”
Open passage
Joy gleamed in Bhardvája's eye,
Open passage
Who gently smiled and made reply:
Open passage
“Thy brother, studious of thy will,
Open passage
Is faithful and obedient still.
Open passage
In tangled twine he coils his hair:
Open passage
Thy safe return is all his care.
Open passage
Before thy shoes he humbly bends,
Open passage
And to thy house and realm attends.
Open passage
When first these dreary years began,
Open passage
When first I saw the banished man,
Open passage
With Sítá, in his hermit coat,
Open passage
At this sad heart compassion smote.
Open passage
My breast with tender pity swelled:
Open passage
I saw thee from thy home expelled,
Open passage
Reft of all princely state, forlorn,
Open passage
A hapless wanderer travel-worn,
Open passage
Firm in thy purpose to fulfil
Open passage
Thy duty and thy father's will.
Open passage
But boundless is my rapture now:
Open passage
Triumphant, girt with friends, art thou.
Open passage
Where'er thy wandering steps have been,
Open passage
Thy joy and woe mine eyes have seen.
Open passage
Thy glorious deeds to me art known,
Open passage
The Bráhmans saved, the foes o'erthrown.
Open passage
Such power have countless seasons spent
Open passage
In penance and devotion lent.
Open passage
Thy virtues, best of chiefs, I know,
Open passage
And now a boon would fain bestow.
Open passage
This hospitable gift1024 receive:
Open passage
Then with the dawn my dwelling leave.”
Open passage
The bended head of Ráma showed
Open passage
His reverence for the grace bestowed;
