Open passage
Lady that hast my heart within thy hand,
Open passage
Thou heed’st me not; and if thou turn thine ear
Open passage
Unto the wise, thou shalt not understand—
Open passage
Behold the fault is thine, our words were clear.
Open passage
For all the tumult in my drunken brain
Open passage
Praise God! who trieth not His slave in vain;
Open passage
Nor this world nor the next shall make me fear!
Open passage
My weary heart eternal silence keeps—
Open passage
I know not who has slipped into my heart;
Open passage
Though I am silent, one within me weeps.
Open passage
My soul shall rend the painted veil apart.
Open passage
Where art thou, Minstrel! touch thy saddest strings
Open passage
Till clothed in music such as sorrow sings,
Open passage
My mournful story from thy zither sweeps.
Open passage
Lo, not at any time I lent mine ear
Open passage
To hearken to the glories of the earth;
Open passage
Only thy beauty to mine eyes was dear.
Open passage
Sleep has forsaken me, and from the birth
Open passage
Of night till day I weave bright dreams of thee;
Open passage
Drunk with a hundred nights of revelry,
Open passage
Where is the tavern that sets forth such cheer!
Open passage
My heart, sad hermit, stains the cloister floor
Open passage
With drops of blood, the sweat of anguish dire;
Open passage
Ah, wash me clean, and o’er my body pour
Open passage
Love’s generous wine! the worshippers of fire
Open passage
Have bowed them down and magnified my name,
Open passage
For in my heart there burns a living flame,
Open passage
Transpiercing Death’s impenetrable door.
Open passage
What instrument through last night’s silence rang?
Open passage
My life into his lay the minstrel wove,
Open passage
And filled my brain with the sweet song he sang.
Open passage
It was the proclamation of thy love
Open passage
That shook the strings of Life’s most secret lyre,
Open passage
And still my breast heaves with last night’s desire,
Open passage
For countless echoes from that music sprang.
Open passage
And ever, since the time that Hafiz heard
Open passage
His Lady’s voice, as from a rocky hill
Open passage
Reverberates the softly spoken word,
Open passage
So echoes of desire his bosom fill.
