Canto CXXII. Indra's Boon.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Then Indra, he whose fiery stroke
Open passage
Slew furious Páka, turned and spoke:
Open passage
“A glorious day, O chief, is this,
Open passage
Rich with the fruit of lasting bliss.
Open passage
Well pleased are we: we love thee well
Open passage
Now speak, thy secret wishes tell.”
Open passage
Thus spake the sovereign of the sky,
Open passage
And this was Ráma's glad reply:
Open passage
“If I have won your grace, incline
Open passage
To grant this one request of mine.
Open passage
Restore, O King: the Vánar dead
Open passage
Whose blood for me was nobly shed.
Open passage
To life and strength my friends recall,
Open passage
And bring them back from Yáma's hall.
Open passage
When, fresh in might the warriors rise,
Open passage
Prepare a feast to glad their eyes.
Open passage
Let fruits of every season glow,
Open passage
And streams of purest water flow.”
Open passage
Thus Raghu's son, great-hearted, prayed,
Open passage
And Indra thus his answer made:
Open passage
“High is the boon thou seekest: none
Open passage
Should win this grace but Raghu's son.
Open passage
Yet, faithful to the word I spake,
Open passage
I grant the prayer for thy dear sake.
Open passage
The Vánars whom the giants slew
Open passage
Their life and vigour shall renew.
Open passage
Their strength repaired, their gashes healed
Open passage
Whose torrents dyed the battle field,
Open passage
The warrior hosts from death shall rise
Open passage
Like sleepers when their slumber flies.”
Open passage
Restored from Yáma's dark domain
Open passage
The Vánar legions filled the plain,
Open passage
And, round the royal chief arrayed,
Open passage
With wondering hearts obeisance paid.
Open passage
Each God the son of Raghu praised,
Open passage
And cried as loud his voice he raised:
Open passage
“Turn, King, to fair Ayodhyá speed,
Open passage
And leave thy friends of Vánar breed.
Open passage
Thy true devoted consort cheer
Open passage
After long days of woe and fear.
