Open passage
The glorious sight a while he viewed,
Open passage
Then to the town his way pursued.
Open passage
Around the Vánar as he went
Open passage
Breathed from the wood delicious scent,
Open passage
And the soft grass beneath his feet
Open passage
With gem-like flowers was bright and sweet.
Open passage
Still as the Vánar nearer drew
Open passage
More clearly rose the town to view.
Open passage
The palm her fan-like leaves displayed,
Open passage
Priyálas801 lent their pleasant shade,
Open passage
And mid the lower greenery far
Open passage
Conspicuous rose the Kovidár.802
Open passage
A thousand trees mid flowers that glowed
Open passage
Hung down their fruit's delicious load,803
Open passage
And in their crests that rocked and swayed
Open passage
Sweet birds delightful music made.
Open passage
And there were pleasant pools whereon
Open passage
The glories of the lotus shone;
Open passage
And gleams of sparkling fountains, stirred
Open passage
By many a joyous water-bird.
Open passage
Around, in lovely gardens grew
Open passage
Blooms sweet of scent and bright of hue,
Open passage
And Lanká, seat of Rávaṇ's sway,
Open passage
Before the wondering Vánar lay:
Open passage
With stately domes and turrets tall,
Open passage
Encircled by a golden wall,
Open passage
And moats whose waters were aglow
Open passage
With lily blossoms bright below:
Open passage
For Sítá's sake defended well
Open passage
With bolt and bar and sentinel,
Open passage
And Rákshases who roamed in bands
Open passage
With ready bows in eager hands.
Open passage
He saw the stately mansions rise
Open passage
Like pale-hued clouds in autumn skies;
Open passage
Where noble streets were broad and bright,
Open passage
And banners waved on every height.
Open passage
Her gates were glorious to behold
Open passage
Rich with the shine of burnished gold:
Open passage
A lovely city planned and decked
Open passage
By heaven's creative architect,804
