The Joyful Wisdom ("La Gaya Scienza")

THE BOAT OF MYSTERY.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm, Levy, Oscar, Cohn, Paul V. (Paul Victor), Common, Thomas, and Petre, Maude Dominica
Open passage
Yester-eve, when all things slept—
Open passage
Scarce a breeze to stir the lane—
Open passage
I a restless vigil kept,
Open passage
Nor from pillows sleep could gain,
Open passage
Nor from poppies nor—most sure
Open passage
Of opiates—a conscience pure.
Open passage
Thoughts of rest I 'gan forswear,
Open passage
Rose and walked along the strand,
Open passage
Found, in warm and moonlit air,
Open passage
Man and boat upon the sand,
Open passage
Drowsy both, and drowsily
Open passage
Did the boat put out to sea.
Open passage
Passed an hour or two perchance,
Open passage
Or a year? then thought and sense
Open passage
Vanished in the engulfing trance
Open passage
Fathomless, abysses dread
Open passage
Opened—then the vision fled.
Open passage
Morning came: becalmed, the boat
Open passage
Rested on the purple flood:
Open passage
"What had happened?" every throat
Open passage
Shrieked the question: "was there—Blood?"
Open passage
Naught had happened! On the swell
Open passage
We had slumbered, oh, so well!

BEPPA THE PIOUS. AN AVOWAL OF LOVE (during which, however, the poet fell into a pit).
