Open passage
Then Bharat's face was eastward bent
Open passage
As from the royal town he went.
Open passage
He reached Sudámá's farther side,
Open passage
And glorious, gazed upon the tide;
Open passage
Passed Hládiní, and saw her toss
Open passage
Her westering billows hard to cross.
Open passage
Then old Ikshváku's famous son
Open passage
O'er Śatadrú348 his passage won,
Open passage
Near Ailadhána on the strand,
Open passage
And came to Aparparyat's land.
Open passage
O'er Śilá's flood he hurried fast,
Open passage
Akurvatí's fair stream he passed,
Open passage
Crossed o'er Ágneya's rapid rill,
Open passage
And Śalyakartan onward still.
Open passage
Śilávahá's swift stream he eyed,
Open passage
True to his vows and purified,
Open passage
Then crossed the lofty hills, and stood
Open passage
In Chaitraratha's mighty wood.
Open passage
He reached the confluence where meet
Open passage
Sarasvatí349 and Gangá fleet,
Open passage
And through Bháruṇḍa forest, spread
Open passage
Northward of Viramatsya, sped.
Open passage
He sought Kálinda's child, who fills
Open passage
The soul with joy, begirt by hills,
Open passage
Reached Yamuná, and passing o'er,
Open passage
Rested his army on the shore:
Open passage
He gave his horses food and rest,
Open passage
Bathed reeking limb and drooping crest.
Open passage
They drank their fill and bathed them there,
Open passage
And water for their journey bare.
Open passage
Thence through a mighty wood he sped
Open passage
All wild and uninhabited,
Open passage
As in fair chariot through the skies,
Open passage
Most fair in shape a Storm-God flies.
Open passage
At Anśudhána Gangá, hard
Open passage
To cross, his onward journey barred,
Open passage
So turning quickly thence he came
Open passage
To Prágvaṭ's city dear to fame.
Open passage
There having gained the farther side
Open passage
To Kuṭikoshṭiká he hied:
