Canto LXXXIX. The Passage Of Gangá.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
That night the son of Raghu lay
Open passage
On Gangá's bank till break of day:
Open passage
Then with the earliest light he woke
Open passage
And thus to brave Śatrughna spoke.
Open passage
“Rise up, Śatrughna, from thy bed:
Open passage
Why sleepest thou the night is fled.
Open passage
See how the sun who chases night
Open passage
Wakes every lotus with his light.
Open passage
Arise, arise, and first of all
Open passage
The lord of Śringavera call,
Open passage
For he his friendly aid will lend
Open passage
Our army o'er the flood to send.”
Open passage
Thus urged, Śatrughna answered: “I,
Open passage
Remembering Ráma, sleepless lie.”
Open passage
As thus the brothers, each to each,
Open passage
The lion-mettled, ended speech,
Open passage
Came Guha, the Nishádas' king,
Open passage
And spoke with kindly questioning:
Open passage
“Hast thou in comfort passed,” he cried,
Open passage
“The night upon the river side?
Open passage
With thee how fares it? and are these,
Open passage
Thy soldiers, healthy and at ease?”
Open passage
Thus the Nishádas' lord inquired
Open passage
In gentle words which love inspired,
Open passage
And Bharat, Ráma's faithful slave,
Open passage
Thus to the king his answer gave:
Open passage
“The night has sweetly passed, and we
Open passage
Are highly honoured, King, by thee.
Open passage
Now let thy servants boats prepare,
Open passage
Our army o'er the stream to bear.”
Open passage
The speech of Bharat Guha heard,
Open passage
And swift to do his bidding stirred.
Open passage
Within the town the monarch sped
Open passage
And to his ready kinsmen said:
Open passage
“Awake, each kinsman, rise, each friend!
Open passage
May every joy your lives attend.
Open passage
Gather each boat upon the shore
Open passage
And ferry all the army o'er.”
Open passage
Thus Guha spoke: nor they delayed,
Open passage
But, rising quick, their lord obeyed,
