Canto I. Hanumán's Leap.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
He ceased; and mustering his might
Open passage
Sprang downward from the mountain height,
Open passage
While, shattered by each mighty limb,
Open passage
The trees unrooted followed him.
Open passage
The shadow on the ocean cast
Open passage
By his vast form, as on he passed,
Open passage
Flew like a ship before the gale
Open passage
When the strong breeze has filled the sail,
Open passage
And where his course the Vánar held
Open passage
The sea beneath him raged and swelled.
Open passage
Then Gods and all the heavenly train
Open passage
Poured flowerets down in gentle rain;
Open passage
Their voices glad Gandharvas raised,
Open passage
And saints in heaven the Vánar praised.
Open passage
Fain would the Sea his succour lend
Open passage
And Raghu's noble son befriend.
Open passage
He, moved by zeal for Ráma's sake,
Open passage
The hill Maináka789 thus bespake:
Open passage
“O strong Maináka, heaven's decree
Open passage
In days of old appointed thee
Open passage
To be the Asurs bar, and keep
Open passage
The rebels in the lowest deep.
Open passage
Thou guardest those whom heaven has cursed
Open passage
Lest from their prison-house they burst,
Open passage
And standest by the gates of hell
Open passage
Their limitary sentinel.
Open passage
To thee is given the power to spread
Open passage
Or spring above thy watery bed.
Open passage
Now, best of noble mountains, rise
Open passage
And do the thing that I advise.
Open passage
E'en now above thy buried crest
Open passage
Flies mighty Hanumán, the best
Open passage
Of Vánars, moved for Ráma's sake
Open passage
A wonderous deed to undertake.
Open passage
Lift up thy head that he may stay
Open passage
And rest him on his weary way.”
Open passage
He heard, and from his watery shroud,
Open passage
As bursts the sun from autumn cloud,
Open passage
Rose swifty, crowned with plant and tree,
Open passage
And stood above the foamy sea.790
