Canto XXXVII. Preparations.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Lords of the legions of the wood,
Open passage
The chieftains with Vibhishaṇ stood,
Open passage
And, strangers in the foeman's land,
Open passage
Their hopes and fears in council scanned:
Open passage
“See, see where Lanká's towers ascend,
Open passage
Which Rávaṇ's power and might defend,
Open passage
Which Gods, Gandharvas, fiends would fail
Open passage
To conquer, if they durst assail.
Open passage
How shall our legions pass within,
Open passage
The city of the foe to win,
Open passage
With massive walls and portals barred
Open passage
Which Rávaṇ keeps with surest guard?”
Open passage
With anxious looks the walls they eyed:
Open passage
And sage Vibhishaṇ thus replied:
Open passage
“These lords of mine946 can answer: they
Open passage
Within the walls have found their way,
Open passage
The foeman's plan and order learned,
Open passage
And hither to my side returned.
Open passage
Now, Ráma, let my tongue declare
Open passage
How Rávaṇ's hosts are stationed there.
Open passage
Prahasta heads, in warlike state,
Open passage
His legions at the eastern gate.
Open passage
To guard the southern portal stands
Open passage
Mahodar, girt by Rákshas bands,
Open passage
Where mighty Mahápárśva, sent
Open passage
By Rávaṇ's hest, his aid has lent.
Open passage
Guard of the gate that fronts the west
Open passage
Is valiant Indrajít, the best
Open passage
Of warriors, Rávaṇ's joy and pride;
Open passage
And by the youthful chieftain's side
Open passage
Are giants, armed for fierce attacks
Open passage
With sword and mace and battle-axe.
Open passage
North, where approach is dreaded most,
Open passage
The king, encompassed with a host
Open passage
Of giants trained in war, whose hands
Open passage
Wield maces, swords and lances, stands.
Open passage
All these are chiefs whom Rávaṇ chose
Open passage
As mightiest to resist his foes;
Open passage
And each a countless army947 leads
Open passage
With elephants and cars and steeds.”
