THE CHATTERBOX

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Mabie, Hamilton Wright, Forbush, William Byron, and Hale, Edward Everett
Open passage
From morning to night 't was Lucy's delight
Open passage
To chatter and talk without stopping;
Open passage
There was not a day but she rattled away,
Open passage
Like water forever a-dropping!
Open passage
As soon as she rose, while she put on her clothes,
Open passage
'Twas vain to endeavor to still her;
Open passage
Nor once did she lack to continue her clack,
Open passage
Till again she lay down on her pillow.
Open passage
You'll think now, perhaps, there would have been gaps,
Open passage
If she hadn't been wonderful clever;
Open passage
That her sense was so great, and so witty her pate
Open passage
That it would be forthcoming forever.
Open passage
But that's quite absurd; for have you not heard,
Open passage
Much tongue and few brains are connected,
Open passage
That they are supposed to think least who talk most,
Open passage
And their wisdom is always suspected?
Open passage
While Lucy was young, had she bridled her tongue
Open passage
With a little good sense and exertion,
Open passage
Who knows but she might have been our delight,
Open passage
Instead of our jest and aversion?
