The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto CXIV. Vibhishan Consecrated.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Joy reigned in heaven where every eye
Open passage
Had seen the Lord of Lanká die.
Open passage
In cars whose sheen surpassed the sun's
Open passage
Triumphant rode the radiant ones:
Open passage
And Rávaṇ's death, by every tongue,
Open passage
And Ráma's glorious deeds were sung.
Open passage
They praised the Vánars true and brave,
Open passage
The counsel wise Sugríva gave.
Open passage
The deeds of Hanúmán they told,
Open passage
The valiant chief supremely bold,
Open passage
The strong ally, the faithful friend,
Open passage
And Sítá's truth which naught could bend.
Open passage
To Mátali, whom Indra sent,
Open passage
His head the son of Raghu bent:
Open passage
And he with fiery steeds who clove
Open passage
The clouds again to Swarga drove.
Open passage
Round King Sugríva brave and true
Open passage
His arms in rapture Ráma threw,
Open passage
Looked on the host with joy and pride,
Open passage
And thus to noble Lakshmaṇ cried:
Open passage
“Now let king-making drops be shed,
Open passage
Dear brother, on Vibhishaṇ's head
Open passage
For truth and friendship nobly shown,
Open passage
And make him lord of Rávaṇ's throne.”
Open passage
This longing of his heart he told:
Open passage
And Lakshmaṇ took an urn of gold
Open passage
And bade the wind-fleet Vánars bring
Open passage
Sea water for the giants' king.
Open passage
The brimming urn was swiftly brought:
Open passage
Then on a throne superbly wrought
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ sat, the giants' lord,
Open passage
And o'er his brows the drops were poured.
Open passage
As Raghu's son the rite beheld
Open passage
His loving heart with rapture swelled:
Open passage
But tenderer thoughts within him woke,
Open passage
And thus to Hanúmán he spoke:
Open passage
“Go to my queen: this message give:
Open passage
Say Lakshmaṇ and Sugríva live.
Open passage
The death of Lanká's monarch tell,
Open passage
And bid her joy, for all is well.”
