Canto XLI. Márícha's Reply.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Pride, violence, and sullen hate
Open passage
Will ne'er maintain a monarch's state,
Open passage
And those who cruel deeds advise
Open passage
Must perish when their master dies,
Open passage
Like drivers with their cars o'erthrown
Open passage
In places rough with root and stone.
Open passage
The good whose holy lives were spent
Open passage
On duty's highest laws intent,
Open passage
With wives and children many a time
Open passage
Have perished for another's crime.
Open passage
Hapless are they whose sovereign lord,
Open passage
Opposed to all, by all abhorred,
Open passage
Is cruel-hearted, harsh, severe:
Open passage
Thus might a jackal tend the deer.
Open passage
Now all the giant race await,
Open passage
Destroyed by thee, a speedy fate,
Open passage
Ruled by a king so cruel-souled,
Open passage
Foolish in heart and uncontrolled.
Open passage
Think not I fear the sudden blow
Open passage
That threatens now to lay me low:
Open passage
I mourn the ruin that I see
Open passage
Impending o'er thy host and thee.
Open passage
Me first perchance will Ráma kill,
Open passage
But soon his hand thy blood will spill.
Open passage
I die, and if by Ráma slain
Open passage
And not by thee, I count it gain.
Open passage
Soon as the hero's face I see
Open passage
His angry eyes will murder me,
Open passage
And if on her thy hands thou lay
Open passage
Thy friends and thou are dead this day.
Open passage
If with my help thou still must dare
Open passage
The lady from her lord to tear,
Open passage
Farewell to all our days are o'er,
Open passage
Lanká and giants are no more.
Open passage
In vain, in vain, an earnest friend,
Open passage
I warn thee, King, and pray.
Open passage
Thou wilt not to my prayers attend,
Open passage
So men, when life is fleeting fast
Open passage
And death's sad hour is nigh,
