Open passage
We have the same history, the same “pilgrim’s progress,” given to us in another form. Matilda calls it “The Path of Love.”—It is her own story, the years of dreary penance, followed by the revelation of Christ to the soul.
Open passage
“O thou that lovest, wouldst thou know
Open passage
The path wherein thy feet should go?”
Open passage
“Yea, teach it, Lord, to me.”
Open passage
“Through drear repentance leads the way,
Open passage
And the shame of sin confessed—
Open passage
And when thou hast trod on the world’s display,
Open passage
And on the devil’s behest,
Open passage
And on the flesh in its haughty pride,
Open passage
And on thy helpless will,
Open passage
That holds the soul of the chosen bride
Open passage
In bonds and slavery still,
Open passage
And when the enemy conquered lies,
Open passage
And weary art thou and athirst—
Open passage
Then to Him whom thou lovest lift thine eyes,
Open passage
To Him who loved thee first.”
Open passage
Then shall He speak and say—
Open passage
“I hear a voice that calleth amain,
Open passage
A voice of love and tears;
Open passage
I have wooed, and I have listened in vain
Open passage
Through long, long years—
Open passage
My heart is troubled, and I must haste
Open passage
To the sad sweet voice across the waste.”
Open passage
And in the morning, when the dew is sweet,
Open passage
She hears the gentle music of His feet—
Open passage
She hears Him speak and say, “I heard thy voice.”
Open passage
The glorious One draws nigh;
Open passage
Amidst the dew when all the woods rejoice
Open passage
And she arrays herself in fair attire,
Open passage
Her mantle is the holy judgment fire
Open passage
Wherein the gold is tried.
Open passage
Of meek humility her stole is spun,
Open passage
Her robe is white as snow,
Open passage
For unto Him, the High and Holy One,
