Canto LXXVI. Pampá.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
When Śavarí had sought the skies
Open passage
And gained her splendid virtue's prize,
Open passage
Ráma with Lakshmaṇ stayed to brood
Open passage
O'er the strange scenes their eyes had viewed.
Open passage
His mind upon those saints was bent,
Open passage
For power and might preëminent
Open passage
And he to musing Lakshmaṇ spoke
Open passage
The thoughts that in his bosom woke:
Open passage
“Mine eyes this wondrous home have viewed
Open passage
Of those great saints with souls subdued,
Open passage
Where peaceful tigers dwell and birds,
Open passage
And deer abound in heedless herds.
Open passage
Our feet upon the banks have stood
Open passage
Of those seven lakes within the wood,
Open passage
Where we have duly dipped, and paid
Open passage
Libations to each royal shade.
Open passage
Forgotten now are thoughts of ill
Open passage
And joyful hopes my bosom fill.
Open passage
Again my heart is light and gay
Open passage
And grief and care have passed away.
Open passage
Come, brother, let us hasten where
Open passage
Bright Pampá's flood is fresh and fair,
Open passage
And towering in their beauty near
Open passage
Mount Rishyamúka's heights appear,
Open passage
Which, offspring of the Lord of Light,
Open passage
Still fearing Báli's conquering might,
Open passage
With four brave chiefs of Vánar race
Open passage
Sugríva makes his dwelling-place.
Open passage
I long with eager heart to find
Open passage
That leader of the Vánar kind,
Open passage
For on that chief my hopes depend
Open passage
That this our quest have prosperous end.”
Open passage
Thus Ráma spoke, in battle tried,
Open passage
And thus Sumitrá's son replied:
Open passage
“Come, brother, come, and speed away:
Open passage
My spirit brooks no more delay.”
Open passage
Thus spake Sumitrá's son, and then
Open passage
Forth from the grove the king of men
Open passage
With his dear brother by his side
Open passage
To Pampá's lucid waters hied.
