The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto IV. Ráma Summoned.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Rites to the Gods, in hundreds, paid,
Open passage
With gifts of corn and largess made.
Open passage
I yearned for sons: my life is blest
Open passage
With them and thee of sons the best.
Open passage
No debt to saints or Bráhmans, no,
Open passage
Nor spirits, Gods, or self I owe.
Open passage
One duty now remains alone,
Open passage
To set thee on thy father's throne.
Open passage
Now therefore, Ráma, hear my rede,
Open passage
And mark my words with duteous heed:
Open passage
This day the peoples' general voice,
Open passage
Elects thee king of love and choice,
Open passage
And I, consenting to the prayer,
Open passage
Will make thee, darling, Regent Heir.
Open passage
Dread visions, each returning night,
Open passage
With evil omens scare my sight.
Open passage
Red meteors with a fearful sound
Open passage
Shoot wildly downward to the ground,
Open passage
While tempests lash the troubled air;
Open passage
And they who read the stars declare
Open passage
That, leagued against my natal sign,
Open passage
Ráhu,265 the Sun,266 and Mars combine.
Open passage
When portents dire as these appear,
Open passage
A monarch's death or woe is near.
Open passage
Then while my senses yet are spared,
Open passage
And thought and will are unimpaired,
Open passage
Be thou, my son, anointed king:
Open passage
Men's fancy is a fickle thing.
Open passage
To-day the moon, in order due,
Open passage
Entered the sign Punarvasu,267
Open passage
To-morrow, as the wise foretell,
Open passage
In Pushya's favouring stars will dwell:
Open passage
Then on the throne shalt thou be placed.
Open passage
My soul, prophetic, counsels haste:
Open passage
Thee, O my son, to-morrow I
Open passage
As Regent Heir will sanctify.
Open passage
So till the coming night be passed
Open passage
Do thou and Sítá strictly fast:
Open passage
From worldly thoughts thy soul refrain,
Open passage
And couched on holy grass remain.
