Open passage
Then Rávaṇ spake with flashing eye:
Open passage
“Hence with the Vánar: let him die.”
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ heard the stern behest,
Open passage
And pondered in his troubled breast;
Open passage
Then, trained in arts that soothe and please
Open passage
Addressed the king in words like these:
Open passage
“Revoke, my lord, thy fierce decree,
Open passage
And hear the words I speak to thee.
Open passage
Kings wise and noble ne'er condemn
Open passage
To death the envoys sent to them.
Open passage
Such deed the world's contempt would draw
Open passage
On him who breaks the ancient law.885
Open passage
Observe the mean where justice lies,
Open passage
And spare his life but still chastise.”
Open passage
Then forth the tyrant's fury broke,
Open passage
And thus in angry words he spoke:
Open passage
“O hero, when the wicked bleed
Open passage
No sin or shame attends the deed.
Open passage
The Vánar's blood must needs be spilt,
Open passage
The penalty of heinous guilt.”
Open passage
Again Vibhishaṇ made reply:
Open passage
“Nay, hear me, for he must not die.
Open passage
Hear the great law the wise declare:
Open passage
“Thy foeman's envoy thou shalt spare.”
Open passage
'Tis true he comes an open foe:
Open passage
'Tis true his hands have wrought us woe,
Open passage
But law allows thee, if thou wilt,
Open passage
A punishment to suit the guilt.
Open passage
The mark of shame, the scourge, the brand,
Open passage
The shaven head, the wounded hand.
Open passage
Yea, were the Vánar envoy slain,
Open passage
Where, King of giants, were the gain?
Open passage
On them alone, on them who sent
Open passage
The message, be the punishment.
Open passage
For spake he well or spake he ill,
Open passage
He spake obedient to their will,
Open passage
And, if he perish, who can bear
Open passage
Thy challenge to the royal pair?
Open passage
Who, cross the ocean and incite
Open passage
Thy death-doomed enemies to fight?”
