Canto XXVI. Alone With Sítá.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Where are the royal fans, to grace
Open passage
The lotus beauty of thy face,
Open passage
Fair as the moon or wild-swan's wing,
Open passage
And waving round the new-made king?
Open passage
Why do no sweet-toned bards rejoice
Open passage
To hail thee with triumphant voice?
Open passage
No tuneful heralds love to raise
Open passage
Loud music in their monarch's praise?
Open passage
Why do no Bráhmans, Scripture-read,
Open passage
Pour curds and honey on thy head,
Open passage
Anointed, as the laws ordain,
Open passage
With holy rites, supreme to reign?
Open passage
Where are the chiefs of every guild?
Open passage
Where are the myriads should have filled
Open passage
The streets, and followed home their king
Open passage
With merry noise and triumphing?
Open passage
Why does no gold-wrought chariot lead
Open passage
With four brave horses, best for speed?
Open passage
No elephant precede the crowd
Open passage
Like a huge hill or thunder cloud,
Open passage
Marked from his birth for happy fate,
Open passage
Whom signs auspicious decorate?
Open passage
Why does no henchman, young and fair,
Open passage
Precede thee, and delight to bear
Open passage
Entrusted to his reverent hold
Open passage
The burthen of thy throne of gold?
Open passage
Why, if the consecrating rite
Open passage
Be ready, why this mournful plight?
Open passage
Why do I see this sudden change,
Open passage
This altered mien so sad and strange?”
Open passage
To her, as thus she weeping cried,
Open passage
Raghu's illustrious son replied:
Open passage
“Sítá, my honoured sire's decree
Open passage
Commands me to the woods to flee.
Open passage
O high-born lady, nobly bred
Open passage
In the good paths thy footsteps tread,
Open passage
Hear, Janak's daughter, while I tell
Open passage
The story as it all befell.
Open passage
Of old my father true and brave
Open passage
Two boons to Queen Kaikeyí gave.
