Canto XXXV. Rávan's Journey.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
When Rávaṇ, by her fury spurred,
Open passage
That terrible advice had heard,
Open passage
He bade his nobles quit his side,
Open passage
And to the work his thought applied.
Open passage
He turned his anxious mind to scan
Open passage
On every side the hardy plan:
Open passage
The gain against the risk he laid,
Open passage
Each hope and fear with care surveyed,
Open passage
And in his heart at length decreed
Open passage
To try performance of the deed.
Open passage
Then steady in his dire intent
Open passage
The giant to the courtyard went.
Open passage
There to his charioteer he cried,
Open passage
“Bring forth the car whereon I ride.”
Open passage
Aye ready at his master's word
Open passage
The charioteer the order heard,
Open passage
And yoked with active zeal the best
Open passage
Of chariots at his lord's behest.
Open passage
Asses with heads of goblins drew
Open passage
That wondrous car where'er it flew.
Open passage
Obedient to the will it rolled
Open passage
Adorned with gems and glistering gold.
Open passage
Then mounting, with a roar as loud
Open passage
As thunder from a labouring cloud,
Open passage
The mighty monarch to the tide
Open passage
Of Ocean, lord of rivers, hied.
Open passage
White was the shade above him spread,
Open passage
White chouris waved around his head,
Open passage
And he with gold and jewels bright
Open passage
Shone like the glossy lazulite.
Open passage
Ten necks and twenty arms had he:
Open passage
His royal gear was good to see.
Open passage
The heavenly Gods' insatiate foe,
Open passage
Who made the blood of hermits flow,
Open passage
He like the Lord of Hills appeared
Open passage
With ten huge heads to heaven upreared.
Open passage
In the great car whereon he rode,
Open passage
Like some dark cloud the giant showed,
Open passage
When round it in their close array
Open passage
The cranes 'mid wreaths of lightning play.
