Canto XXIV. Sítá's Reply.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Still with reproaches rough and rude
Open passage
Those fiends the gentle queen pursued:
Open passage
“What! can so fair a life displease,
Open passage
To dwell with him in joyous ease?
Open passage
Dwell in his bowers a happy queen
Open passage
In silk and gold and jewels' sheen?
Open passage
Still must thy woman fancy cling
Open passage
To Ráma and reject our king?
Open passage
Die in thy folly, or forget
Open passage
That wretched wandering anchoret.
Open passage
Come, Sítá, in luxurious bowers
Open passage
Spend with our lord thy happy hours;
Open passage
The mighty lord who makes his own
Open passage
The treasures of the worlds o'erthrown.”
Open passage
Then, as a tear bedewed her eye,
Open passage
The hapless lady made reply:
Open passage
“I loathe, with heart and soul detest
Open passage
The shameful life your words suggest.
Open passage
Eat, if you will, this mortal frame:
Open passage
My soul rejects the sin and shame.
Open passage
A homeless wanderer though he be,
Open passage
In him my lord, my life I see,
Open passage
And, till my earthly days be done,
Open passage
Will cling to great Ikshváku's son.”
Open passage
Then with fierce eyes on Sítá set
Open passage
They cried again with taunt and threat:
Open passage
Each licking with her fiery tongue
Open passage
The lip that to her bosom hung,
Open passage
And menacing the lady's life
Open passage
With axe, or spear or murderous knife:
Open passage
“Hear, Sítá, and our words obey,
Open passage
Or perish by our hands to-day.
Open passage
Thy love for Raghu's son forsake,
Open passage
And Rávaṇ for thy husband take,
Open passage
Or we will rend thy limbs apart
Open passage
And banquet on thy quivering heart.
Open passage
Now from her body strike the head,
Open passage
And tell the king the dame is dead.
Open passage
Then by our lord's commandment she
Open passage
A banquet for our band shall be.
