Open passage
The bathing and the prayer were o'er;
Open passage
He turned him from the grassy shore,
Open passage
And with his brother and his spouse
Open passage
Sought his fair home beneath the boughs.
Open passage
Sítá and Lakshmaṇ by his side,
Open passage
On to his cot the hero hied,
Open passage
And after rites at morning due
Open passage
Within the leafy shade withdrew.
Open passage
Then, honoured by the devotees,
Open passage
As royal Ráma sat at ease,
Open passage
With Sítá near him, o'er his head
Open passage
A canopy of green boughs spread,
Open passage
He shone as shines the Lord of Night
Open passage
By Chitrá's457 side, his dear delight.
Open passage
With Lakshmaṇ there he sat and told
Open passage
Sweet stories of the days of old,
Open passage
And as the pleasant time he spent
Open passage
With heart upon each tale intent,
Open passage
A giantess, by fancy led,
Open passage

Open passage
Fierce Śúrpaṇakhá,—her of yore
Open passage
The Ten-necked tyrant's mother bore,—
Open passage
Saw Ráma with his noble mien
Open passage
Bright as the Gods in heaven are seen;
Open passage
Him from whose brow a glory gleamed,
Open passage
Like lotus leaves his full eyes beamed:
Open passage
Long-armed, of elephantine gait,
Open passage
With hair close coiled in hermit plait:
Open passage
In youthful vigour, nobly framed,
Open passage
By glorious marks a king proclaimed:
Open passage
Like some bright lotus lustrous-hued,
Open passage
With young Kandarpa's458 grace endued:
Open passage
As there like Indra's self he shone,
Open passage
She loved the youth she gazed upon.
Open passage
She grim of eye and foul of face
Open passage
Loved his sweet glance and forehead's grace:
Open passage
She of unlovely figure, him
Open passage
Of stately form and shapely limb:
Open passage
She whose dim locks disordered hung,
Open passage
Him whose bright hair on high brows clung:
