Canto XVI. Ráma Summoned.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
So through the crowded inner door
Open passage
Sumantra, skilled in ancient lore,
Open passage
On to the private chambers pressed
Open passage
Which stood apart from all the rest.
Open passage
There youthful warriors, true and bold,
Open passage
Whose ears were ringed with polished gold,
Open passage
All armed with trusty bows and darts,
Open passage
Watched with devoted eyes and hearts.
Open passage
And hoary men, a faithful train,
Open passage
Whose aged hands held staves of cane,
Open passage
The ladies' guard, apparelled fair
Open passage
In red attire, were stationed there.
Open passage
Soon as they saw Sumantra nigh,
Open passage
Each longed his lord to gratify,
Open passage
And from his seat beside the door
Open passage
Up sprang each ancient servitor.
Open passage
Then to the warders quickly cried
Open passage
The skilled Sumantra, void of pride:
Open passage
“Tell Ráma that the charioteer
Open passage
Sumantra waits for audience here.”
Open passage
The ancient men with one accord
Open passage
Seeking the pleasure of their lord,
Open passage
Passing with speed the chamber door
Open passage
To Ráma's ear the message bore.
Open passage
Forthwith the prince with duteous heed
Open passage
Called in the messenger with speed,
Open passage
For 'twas his sire's command, he knew,
Open passage
That sent him for the interview.
Open passage
Like Lord Kuvera, well arrayed,
Open passage
He pressed a couch of gold,
Open passage
Wherefrom a covering of brocade
Open passage
Hung down in many a fold.
Open passage
Oil and the sandal's fragrant dust
Open passage
Had tinged his body o'er
Open passage
Dark as the stream the spearman's thrust
Open passage
Drains from the wounded boar.
Open passage
Him Sítá watched with tender care,
Open passage
As Chitrá,281 ever fond in fair,
Open passage
Beside the Moon will stand.
