Canto L. The Enchanted Cave.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Angad and Tára by his side,
Open passage
Again rose Hanumán and tried
Open passage
Each mountain cavern, dark and deep,
Open passage
And stony pass and wooded steep,
Open passage
The lion's and the tiger's home,
Open passage
By rushing torrents white with foam.
Open passage
Then with new ardour, south and west,
Open passage
O'er Vindhya's height the search they pressed.
Open passage
The day prescribed was near and they
Open passage
Still wandered on their weary way.
Open passage
They reached the southern land beset
Open passage
With woody mountains like a net.
Open passage
At length a mighty cave they spied
Open passage
That opened in a mountain's side.
Open passage
Where many a verdant creeper grew
Open passage
And o'er the mouth its tendrils threw.
Open passage
Thence issued crane, and swan, and drake,
Open passage
And trooping birds that love the lake.
Open passage
The Vánars rushed within to cool
Open passage
Their fevered lips in spring or pool.
Open passage
Vast was the cavern dark and dread,
Open passage
Where not a ray of light was shed;
Open passage
Yet not the more their eyesight failed,
Open passage
Their courage sank or valour quailed.
Open passage
On through the gloom the Vánars pressed
Open passage
With hunger, thirst, and toil distressed,
Open passage
Poor helpless wanderers, sad, forlorn,
Open passage
With wasted faces wan and worn.
Open passage
At length, when life seemed lost for aye,
Open passage
They saw a splendour as of day,
Open passage
A wondrous forest, fair and bright,
Open passage
Where golden trees shot flamy light.
Open passage
And lotus-covered pools were there
Open passage
With pleasant waters fresh and fair,
Open passage
And streams their rippling currents rolled
Open passage
By seats of silver and of gold.
Open passage
Fair houses reared their stately height
Open passage
Of burnished gold and lazulite,
Open passage
And glorious was the lustre thrown
Open passage
Through lattices of precious stone.
