Canto XXXIII. Lakshman's Entry.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
There blooming trees, Mahendra's gift,
Open passage
High o'er the walls were seen to lift
Open passage
Their golden fruited boughs, that made
Open passage
With leaf and flower delicious shade.
Open passage
He saw a band of Vánars wait,
Open passage
Wielding their weapons, at the gate
Open passage
Where golden portals flashed between
Open passage
Celestial garlands red and green.
Open passage
Within Sugríva's fair abode
Open passage
Unchecked the mighty hero strode,
Open passage
As when the sun of autumn shrouds
Open passage
His glory in a pile of clouds.
Open passage
Through seven wide courts he quickly passed,
Open passage
And reached the royal tower at last,
Open passage
Where seats were set with couch and bed
Open passage
Of gold and silver richly spread.
Open passage
While the young chieftain's feet drew near
Open passage
The sound of music reached his ear,
Open passage
As the soft breathings of the flute
Open passage
Came blending with the voice and lute.
Open passage
Then beauty showed her youth and grace
Open passage
And varied charm of form and face:
Open passage
Soft bright-eyed creatures, fair and young,—
Open passage
Gay garlands round their necks were hung,
Open passage
And greater charms to each were lent
Open passage
By richest dress and ornament.
Open passage
He saw the calm attendants wait
Open passage
About their lord in careless state,
Open passage
Heard women's girdles chime in sweet
Open passage
Accordance with their tinkling feet.
Open passage
He heard the anklet's silvery sound,
Open passage
He saw the calm that reigned around,
Open passage
And o'er him, as he listened, came
Open passage
A rush of rage, a flood of shame.
Open passage
He drew his bowstring: with the clang
Open passage
From ease to west the welkin rang:
Open passage
Then in his modest mood withdrew
Open passage
A little from the ladies' view.
Open passage
And sternly silent stood apart,
Open passage
While wrath for Ráma filled his heart.
