Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
His words the Maithil lady heard
Open passage
Oppressed by woe but undeterred.
Open passage
Fear of the fiend she cast aside,
Open passage
And thus in noble scorn replied:
Open passage
“His word of honour never stained
Open passage
King Daśaratha nobly reigned,
Open passage
The bridge of right, the friend of truth.
Open passage
His eldest son, a noble youth,
Open passage
Is Ráma, virtue's faithful friend,
Open passage
Whose glories through the worlds extend.
Open passage
Long arms and large full eyes has he,
Open passage
My husband, yea a God to me.
Open passage
With shoulders like the forest king's,
Open passage
From old Ikshváku's line he springs.
Open passage
He with his brother Lakshmaṇ's aid
Open passage
Will smite thee with the vengeful blade.
Open passage
Hadst thou but dared before his eyes
Open passage
To lay thine hand upon the prize,
Open passage
Thou stretched before his feet hadst lain
Open passage
In Janasthán like Khara slain.
Open passage
Thy boasted rovers of the night
Open passage
With hideous shapes and giant might,—
Open passage
Like serpents when the feathered king
Open passage
Swoops down with his tremendous wing,—
Open passage
Will find their useless venom fail
Open passage
When Ráma's mighty arms assail.
Open passage
The rapid arrows bright with gold,
Open passage
Shot from the bow he loves to hold,
Open passage
Will rend thy frame from flank to flank
Open passage
As Gangá's waves erode the bank.
Open passage
Though neither God nor fiend have power
Open passage
To slay thee in the battle hour,
Open passage
Yet from his hand shall come thy fate,
Open passage
Struck down before his vengeful hate.
Open passage
That mighty lord will strike and end
Open passage
The days of life thou hast to spend.
Open passage
Thy days are doomed, thy life is sped
Open passage
Like victims to the pillar led.
Open passage
Yea, if the glance of Ráma bright
Open passage
With fury on thy form should light,
