Open passage
The rose has flushed red, the bud has burst,
Open passage
And drunk with joy is the nightingale—
Open passage
Hail, Sufis! lovers of wine, all hail!
Open passage
For wine is proclaimed to a world athirst.
Open passage
Like a rock your repentance seemed to you;
Open passage
Behold the marvel! of what avail
Open passage
Was your rock, for a goblet has cleft it in two!
Open passage
Bring wine for the king and the slave at the gate!
Open passage
Alike for all is the banquet spread,
Open passage
And drunk and sober are warmed and fed.
Open passage
When the feast is done and the night grows late,
Open passage
And the second door of the tavern gapes wide,
Open passage
The low and the mighty must bow the head
Open passage
’Neath the archway of Life, to meet what ... outside?
Open passage
Except thy road through affliction pass,
Open passage
None may reach the halting-station of mirth;
Open passage
God’s treaty: Am I not Lord of the earth?
Open passage
Man sealed with a sigh: Ah yes, alas!
Open passage
Nor with Is nor Is Not let thy mind contend;
Open passage
Rest assured all perfection of mortal birth
Open passage
In the great Is Not at the last shall end.
Open passage
For Assaf’s pomp, and the steeds of the wind,
Open passage
And the speech of birds, down the wind have fled,
Open passage
And he that was lord of them all is dead;
Open passage
Of his mastery nothing remains behind.
Open passage
Shoot not thy feathered arrow astray!
Open passage
A bow-shot’s length through the air it has sped,
Open passage
And then ... dropped down in the dusty way.
Open passage
But to thee, oh Hafiz, to thee, oh Tongue
Open passage
That speaks through the mouth of the slender reed,
Open passage
What thanks to thee when thy verses speed
Open passage
From lip to lip, and the song thou hast sung?
