The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto XIII. Rávan's Speech.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Like Naliní923 with soil distained,
Open passage
The mansion of the Sire she gained,
Open passage
And weeping made the outrage known
Open passage
To Brahmá on his heavenly throne.
Open passage
He in his wrath pronounced a curse,—
Open passage
That lord who made the universe:
Open passage
“If, Rávaṇ, thou a second time
Open passage
Be guilty of so foul a crime,
Open passage
Thy head in shivers shall be rent:
Open passage
Be warned, and dread the punishment.”
Open passage
Awed by the threat of vengeance still
Open passage
I force not Sítá's stubborn will.
Open passage
Terrific as the sea in might:
Open passage
My steps are like the Storm-Gods' flight;
Open passage
But Ráma knows not this, or he
Open passage
Had never sought to war with me.
Open passage
Where is the man would idly brave
Open passage
The lion in his mountain cave,
Open passage
And wake him when with slumbering eyes
Open passage
Grim, terrible as Death, he lies?
Open passage
No, blinded Ráma knows me not:
Open passage
Ne'er has he seen mine arrows shot;
Open passage
Ne'er marked them speeding to their aim
Open passage
Like snakes with cloven tongues of flame.
Open passage
On him those arrows will I turn,
Open passage
Whose fiery points shall rend and burn.
Open passage
Quenched by my power when I assail
Open passage
The glory of his might shall fail,
Open passage
As stars before the sun grow dim
Open passage
And yield their feeble light to him.”
