Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Márícha gave attentive ear
Open passage
The ruler of the fiends to hear:
Open passage
Then, trained in all the rules that teach
Open passage
The eloquent, began his speech:
Open passage
“'Tis easy task, O King, to find
Open passage
Smooth speakers who delight the mind.
Open passage
But they who urge and they who do
Open passage
Distasteful things and wise, are few.
Open passage
Thou hast not learnt, by proof untaught,
Open passage
And borne away by eager thought,
Open passage
That Ráma, formed for high emprise,
Open passage
With Varuṇ or with Indra vies.
Open passage
Still let thy people live in peace,
Open passage
Nor let their name and lineage cease,
Open passage
For Ráma with his vengeful hand
Open passage
Can sweep the giants from the land.
Open passage
O, let not Janak's daughter bring
Open passage
Destruction on the giant king.
Open passage
Let not the lady Sítá wake
Open passage
A tempest, on thy head to break.
Open passage
Still let the dame, by care untried,
Open passage
Be happy by her husband's side,
Open passage
Lest swift avenging ruin fall
Open passage
On glorious Lanká, thee, and all.
Open passage
Men such as thou with wills unchained,
Open passage
Advised by sin and unrestrained,
Open passage
Destroy themselves, the king, the state,
Open passage
And leave the people desolate.
Open passage
Ráma, in bonds of duty held,
Open passage
Was never by his sire expelled.
Open passage
He is no wretch of greedy mind,
Open passage
Dishonour of his Warrior kind.
Open passage
Free from all touch of rancorous spite,
Open passage
All creatures' good is his delight.
Open passage
He saw his sire of truthful heart
Open passage
Deceived by Queen Kaikeyí's art,
Open passage
And said, a true and duteous son,
Open passage
“What thou hast promised shall be done.”
Open passage
To gratify the lady's will,
Open passage
His father's promise to fulfil,
