Canto XXII. Dasaratha's Speech.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
His tortured senses all astray,
Open passage
While the hapless monarch lay,
Open passage
Then slowly gathering thought and strength
Open passage
To Viśvámitra spoke at length:
Open passage
“My son is but a child, I ween;
Open passage
This year he will be just sixteen.
Open passage
How is he fit for such emprise,
Open passage
My darling with the lotus eyes?
Open passage
A mighty army will I bring
Open passage
That calls me master, lord, and king,
Open passage
And with its countless squadrons fight
Open passage
Against these rovers of the night.
Open passage
My faithful heroes skilled to wield
Open passage
The arms of war will take the field;
Open passage
Their skill the demons' might may break:
Open passage
Ráma, my child, thou must not take.
Open passage
I, even I, my bow in hand,
Open passage
Will in the van of battle stand,
Open passage
And, while my soul is left alive,
Open passage
With the night-roaming demons strive.
Open passage
Thy guarded sacrifice shall be
Open passage
Completed, from all hindrance free.
Open passage
Thither will I my journey make:
Open passage
Ráma, my child, thou must not take.
Open passage
A boy unskilled, he knows not yet
Open passage
The bounds to strength and weakness set.
Open passage
No match is he for demon foes
Open passage
Who magic arts to arms oppose.
Open passage
O chief of saints, I have no power,
Open passage
Of Ráma reft, to live one hour:
Open passage
Mine aged heart at once would break:
Open passage
Ráma, my child, thou must not take.
Open passage
Nine thousand circling years have fled
Open passage
With all their seasons o'er my head,
Open passage
And as a hard-won boon, O sage,
Open passage
These sons have come to cheer mine age.
Open passage
My dearest love amid the four
Open passage
Is he whom first his mother bore,
Open passage
Still dearer for his virtues' sake:
Open passage
Ráma, my child, thou must not take.
