Open passage
None else may take his life away,
Open passage
But only man the fiend may slay.”
Open passage
The Gods, with Indra at their head,
Open passage
Rejoiced to hear the words he said.
Open passage
Then crowned with glory like a flame,
Open passage
Lord Vishṇu to the council came;
Open passage
His hands shell, mace, and discus bore,
Open passage
And saffron were the robes he wore.
Open passage
Riding his eagle through the crowd,
Open passage
As the sun rides upon a cloud,
Open passage
With bracelets of fine gold, he came
Open passage
Loud welcomed by the Gods' acclaim.
Open passage
His praise they sang with one consent,
Open passage
And cried, in lowly reverence bent:
Open passage
“O Lord whose hand fierce Madhu106 slew,
Open passage
Be thou our refuge, firm and true;
Open passage
Friend of the suffering worlds art thou,
Open passage
We pray thee help thy suppliants now.”
Open passage
Then Vishṇu spake: “Ye Gods, declare,
Open passage
What may I do to grant your prayer?”
Open passage
“King Daśaratha,” thus cried they,
Open passage
“Fervent in penance many a day,
Open passage
The sacrificial steed has slain,
Open passage
Longing for sons, but all in vain.
Open passage
Now, at the cry of us forlorn,
Open passage
Incarnate as his seed be born.
Open passage
Three queens has he: each lovely dame
Open passage
Like Beauty, Modesty, or Fame.
Open passage
Divide thyself in four, and be
Open passage
His offspring by these noble three.
Open passage
Man's nature take, and slay in fight
Open passage
Rávaṇ who laughs at heavenly might:
Open passage
This common scourge, this rankling thorn
Open passage
Whom the three worlds too long have borne
Open passage
For Rávaṇ in the senseless pride
Open passage
Of might unequalled has defied
Open passage
The host of heaven, and plagues with woe
Open passage
Angel and bard and saint below,
Open passage
Crushing each spirit and each maid
Open passage
Who plays in Nandan's107 heavenly shade.
