Canto I. Nárad.7

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Follow the King of Floods, the sea:
Open passage
So liberal, so just is he.
Open passage
The joy of Queen Kauśalyá's20heart,
Open passage
In every virtue he has part:
Open passage
Firm as Himálaya's21 snowy steep,
Open passage
Unfathomed like the mighty deep:
Open passage
The peer of Vishṇu's power and might,
Open passage
And lovely as the Lord of Night;22
Open passage
Patient as Earth, but, roused to ire,
Open passage
Fierce as the world-destroying fire;
Open passage
In bounty like the Lord of Gold,23
Open passage
And Justice self in human mould.
Open passage
With him, his best and eldest son,
Open passage
By all his princely virtues won
Open passage
King Daśaratha24 willed to share
Open passage
His kingdom as the Regent Heir.
Open passage
But when Kaikeyí, youngest queen,
Open passage
With eyes of envious hate had seen
Open passage
The solemn pomp and regal state
Open passage
Prepared the prince to consecrate,
Open passage
She bade the hapless king bestow
Open passage
Two gifts he promised long ago,
Open passage
That Ráma to the woods should flee,
Open passage
And that her child the heir should be.
Open passage
By chains of duty firmly tied,
Open passage
The wretched king perforce complied.
Open passage
Ráma, to please Kaikeyí went
Open passage
Obedient forth to banishment.
Open passage
Then Lakshmaṇ's truth was nobly shown,
Open passage
Then were his love and courage known,
Open passage
When for his brother's sake he dared
Open passage
All perils, and his exile shared.
Open passage
And Sítá, Ráma's darling wife,
Open passage
Loved even as he loved his life,
Open passage
Whom happy marks combined to bless,
Open passage
A miracle of loveliness,
Open passage
Of Janak's royal lineage sprung,
Open passage
Most excellent of women, clung
Open passage
To her dear lord, like Rohiṇí
Open passage
Rejoicing with the Moon to be.25
