Canto XXII. Ocean Threatened.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
'Tis vain to try each gentler art
Open passage
To bribe and soothe the thankless heart;
Open passage
In vain on such is mercy spent;
Open passage
It yields to naught but punishment.
Open passage
Through fear alone will Ocean now
Open passage
A passage o'er his waves allow.
Open passage
My mother, ere she bore her son,
Open passage
This boon from Viśvakarmá won:
Open passage
“O Mandarí, thy child shall be
Open passage
In skill and glory next to me.”
Open passage
But why unbidden should I fill
Open passage
Thine ear with praises of my skill?
Open passage
Command the Vánar hosts to lay
Open passage
Foundations for the bridge to-day.”
Open passage
He spoke: and swift at Ráma's hest
Open passage
Up sprang the Vánars from their rest,
Open passage
The mandate of the king obeyed
Open passage
And sought the forest's mighty shade.
Open passage
Unrooted trees to earth they threw,
Open passage
And to the sea the timber drew.
Open passage
The stately palm was bowed and bent,
Open passage
Aśokas from the ground were rent,
Open passage
And towering Sáls and light bamboos,
Open passage
And trees with flowers of varied hues,
Open passage
With loveliest creepers wreathed and crowned,
Open passage
Shook, reeled, and fell upon the ground.
Open passage
With mighty engines piles of stone
Open passage
And seated hills were overthrown:
Open passage
Unprisoned waters sprang on high,
Open passage
In rain descending from the sky:
Open passage
And ocean with a roar and swell
Open passage
Heaved wildly when the mountains fell.
Open passage
Then the great bridge of wondrous strength
Open passage
Was built, a hundred leagues in length.
Open passage
Rocks huge as autumn clouds bound fast
Open passage
With cordage from the shore were cast,
Open passage
And fragments of each riven hill,
Open passage
And trees whose flowers adorned them still.
Open passage
Wild was the tumult, loud the din
Open passage
As ponderous rocks went thundering in.
