Open passage
“What further deed remains to do
Open passage
To vex the Rákshas king anew?
Open passage
The beauty of his grove is marred,
Open passage
Killed are the bravest of his guard.
Open passage
The captains of his host are slain;
Open passage
But forts and palaces remain,
Open passage
Swift is the work and light the toil
Open passage
Each fortress of the foe to spoil.”
Open passage
Reflecting thus, his tail ablaze
Open passage
As through the cloud red lightning plays,
Open passage
He scaled the palaces and spread
Open passage
The conflagration where he sped.
Open passage
From house to house he hurried on,
Open passage
And the wild flames behind him shone.
Open passage
Each mansion of the foe he scaled,
Open passage
And furious fire its roof assailed
Open passage
Till all the common ruin shared:
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ's house alone was spared.
Open passage
From blazing pile to pile he sprang,
Open passage
And loud his shout of triumph rang,
Open passage
As roars the doomsday cloud when all
Open passage
The worlds in dissolution fall.
Open passage
The friendly wind conspired to fan
Open passage
The hungry flames that leapt and ran,
Open passage
And spreading in their fury caught
Open passage
The gilded walls with pearls inwrought,
Open passage
Till each proud palace reeled and fell
Open passage
As falls a heavenly citadel.
Open passage
Loud was the roar the demons raised
Open passage
Mid walls that split and beams that blazed,
Open passage
As each with vain endeavour strove
Open passage
To stay the flames in house or grove.
Open passage
The women, with dishevelled hair,
Open passage
Flocked to the roofs in wild despair,
Open passage
Shrieked out for succour, wept aloud,
Open passage
And fell, like lightning from a cloud.
Open passage
He saw the flames ascend and curl
Open passage
Round turkis, diamond, and pearl,
Open passage
While silver floods and molten gold
Open passage
From ruined wall and latice rolled.
