Canto XXX. The Triumph Of Love.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
The daughter of Videha's king,
Open passage
While Ráma strove to soothe the sting
Open passage
Of her deep anguish, thus began
Open passage
Once more in furtherance of her plan:
Open passage
And with her spirit sorely tried
Open passage
By fear and anger, love and pride,
Open passage
With keenly taunting words addressed
Open passage
Her hero of the stately breast:
Open passage
“Why did the king my sire, who reigns
Open passage
O'er fair Videha's wide domains,
Open passage
Hail Ráma son with joy unwise,
Open passage
A woman in a man's disguise?
Open passage
Now falsely would the people say,
Open passage
By idle fancies led astray,
Open passage
That Ráma's own are power and might,
Open passage
As glorious as the Lord of Light.
Open passage
Why sinkest thou in such dismay?
Open passage
What fears upon thy spirit weigh,
Open passage
That thou, O Ráma, fain wouldst flee
Open passage
From her who thinks of naught but thee?
Open passage
To thy dear will am I resigned
Open passage
In heart and body, soul and mind,
Open passage
As Sávitrí gave all to one,
Open passage
Satyaván, Dyumatsena's son.304
Open passage
Not e'en in fancy can I brook
Open passage
To any guard save thee to look:
Open passage
Let meaner wives their houses shame,
Open passage
To go with thee is all my claim.
Open passage
Like some low actor, deemst thou fit
Open passage
Thy wife to others to commit—
Open passage
Thine own, espoused in maiden youth,
Open passage
Thy wife so long, unblamed for truth?
Open passage
Do thou, my lord, his will obey
Open passage
For whom thou losest royal sway,
Open passage
To whom thou wouldst thy wife confide—
Open passage
Not me, but thee, his wish may guide.
Open passage
Thou must not here thy wife forsake,
Open passage
And to the wood thy journey make,
Open passage
Whether stern penance, grief, and care,
Open passage
Or rule or heaven await thee there.
