Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
With knitted brow and furious eye
Open passage
The stranger made his fierce reply:
Open passage
“In me O fairest dame, behold
Open passage
The brother of the King of Gold.
Open passage
The Lord of Ten Necks my title, named
Open passage
Rávaṇ, for might and valour famed.
Open passage
Gods and Gandharva hosts I scare;
Open passage
Snakes, spirits, birds that roam the air
Open passage
Fly from my coming, wild with fear,
Open passage
Trembling like men when Death is near.
Open passage
Vaiśravaṇ once, my brother, wrought
Open passage
To ire, encountered me and fought,
Open passage
But yielding to superior might
Open passage
Fled from his home in sore affright.
Open passage
Lord of the man-drawn chariot, still
Open passage
He dwells on famed Kailása's hill.
Open passage
I made the vanquished king resign
Open passage
The glorious car which now is mine,—
Open passage
Pushpak, the far-renowned, that flies
Open passage
Will-guided through the buxom skies.
Open passage
Celestial hosts by Indra led
Open passage
Flee from my face disquieted,
Open passage
And where my dreaded feet appear
Open passage
The wind is hushed or breathless is fear.
Open passage
Where'er I stand, where'er I go
Open passage
The troubled waters cease to flow,
Open passage
Each spell-bound wave is mute and still
Open passage
And the fierce sun himself is chill.
Open passage
Beyond the sea my Lanká stands
Open passage
Filled with fierce forms and giant bands,
Open passage
A glorious city fair to see
Open passage
A towering height of solid wall,
Open passage
Flashing afar, surrounds it all,
Open passage
Its golden courts enchant the sight,
Open passage
And gates aglow with lazulite.
Open passage
Steeds, elephants, and cars are there,
Open passage
And drums' loud music fills the air,
Open passage
Fair trees in lovely gardens grow
Open passage
Whose boughs with varied fruitage glow.
