2. “The Anarchiad”

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Parrington, Vernon Louis
Open passage
An equal sway, their mind indignant spurns;
Open passage
To wanton sway, the bliss of freedom turns;
Open passage
Led by wild demagogues, the factious crowd,
Open passage
Mean, fierce, imperious, insolent and loud,
Open passage
Nor fame, nor wealth, nor power, nor system draws—
Open passage
They see no object, and perceive no cause;
Open passage
But feel, by turns, in one disastrous hour,
Open passage
Th’ extremes of license, and th’ extremes of power....
Open passage
Will this vain scheme bid restless factions cease,
Open passage
Check foreign wars, or fix internal peace?
Open passage
Call public credit from her grave to rise,
Open passage
Or gain in grandeur what they lose in size?...
Open passage
But know, ye favor’d race, one potent head
Open passage
Must rule your States, and strike your foes with dread.
Open passage
The finance regulate, the trade control,
Open passage
Live through the empire, and accord the whole.
Open passage
Ere death invades, the night’s deep curtain falls,
Open passage
Through ruin’d realms the voice of UNION calls; ...
Open passage
On you she calls! attend the warning cry;
Open passage
Ye live united, or divided die![4]
Open passage
But chief the race allured by fleeting fame,
Open passage
Who seek on earth the politicians name;
Open passage
Auspicious race! whom folly joys to bless,
Open passage
And wealth and honor crown with glad success;
Open passage
Formed, like balloons, by emptiness to rise
Open passage
On pop’lar gales, to waft them through the skies ...
Open passage
See, from the shades, on tiny pinions swell
Open passage
And rise, the young DEMOCRACY of hell!
Open passage
Before their face the powers of Congress fade,
Open passage
And public credit sinks, an empty shade;
Open passage
Wild severance rages, wars intestine spread,
Open passage
Their boasted UNION hides her dying head;
Open passage
The forms of government in ruin hurl’d,
Open passage
Reluctant empire quits the western world.[5]
Open passage
Amid such democratic welter and mortal confusion the sole hope of safety lies in Federalism, and the sapient leader who shall bring order out of the wild misrule is thus greeted:
Open passage
Ardent and bold, the smiling land to save,
Open passage
In council sapient as in action brave,
Open passage
I fear’d young Hamilton’s unshaken soul,
Open passage
And saw his arm our wayward host control; ...
Open passage
Fire in his eye, and thunder on his tongue.[6]
