Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
The twice seven thousand fiends, whose will
Open passage
Could change their shapes, in death were still,
Open passage
With Triśirás and Dúshaṇ slain,
Open passage
And Khara, leader of the train.
Open passage
“O wondrous deed,” the bards began,
Open passage
“The noblest deed of virtuous man!
Open passage
Heroic strength that stood alone,
Open passage
And firmness e'en as Vishṇu's own!”
Open passage
Thus having sung, the shining train
Open passage
Turned to their heavenly homes again.
Open passage
Then the high saints of royal race
Open passage
And loftiest station sought the place,
Open passage
And by the great Agastya led,
Open passage
With reverence to Ráma said:
Open passage
“For this, Lord Indra, glorious sire,
Open passage
Majestic as the burning fire,
Open passage
Who crushes cities in his rage,
Open passage
Sought Śarabhanga's hermitage.
Open passage
Thou wast, this great design to aid,
Open passage
Led by the saints to seek this shade,
Open passage
And with thy mighty arm to kill
Open passage
The giants who delight in ill.
Open passage
Thou Daśaratha's noble son,
Open passage
The battle for our sake hast won,
Open passage
And saints in Daṇḍak's wild who live
Open passage
Their days to holy tasks can give.”
Open passage
Forth from the mountain cavern came
Open passage
The hero Lakshmaṇ with the dame.
Open passage
And rapture beaming from his face,
Open passage
Resought the hermit dwelling-place.
Open passage
Then when the mighty saints had paid
Open passage
Due honour for the victor's aid,
Open passage
The glorious Ráma honoured too
Open passage
By Lakshmaṇ to his cot withdrew.
Open passage
When Sítá looked upon her lord,
Open passage
His foemen slain, the saints restored,
Open passage
In pride and rapture uncontrolled
Open passage
She clasped him in her loving hold.
Open passage
On the dead fiends her glances fell:
Open passage
She saw her lord alive and well,
