Canto CXXIII. The Magic Car.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Then slept the tamer of his foes
Open passage
And spent the night in calm repose.
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ came when morning broke,
Open passage
And hailed the royal chief, and spoke:
Open passage
“Here wait thee precious oil and scents,
Open passage
And rich attire and ornaments.
Open passage
The brimming urns are newly filled,
Open passage
And women in their duty skilled,
Open passage
With lotus-eyes, thy call attend,
Open passage
Assistance at thy bath to lend.”
Open passage
“Let others,” Ráma cried, “desire
Open passage
These precious scents, this rich attire,
Open passage
I heed not such delights as these,
Open passage
For faithful Bharat, ill at ease,
Open passage
Watching for me is keeping now
Open passage
Far far away his rigorous vow.
Open passage
By Bharat's side I long to stand,
Open passage
I long to see my fatherland.
Open passage
Far is Ayodhyá: long, alas,
Open passage
The dreary road and hard to pass.”
Open passage
“One day,” Vibhishaṇ cried, “one day
Open passage
Shall bear thee o'er that length of way.
Open passage
Is not the wondrous chariot mine,
Open passage
Named Pushpak, wrought by hands divine.
Open passage
The prize which Rávaṇ seized of old
Open passage
Victorious o'er the God of Gold?
Open passage
This chariot, kept with utmost care,
Open passage
Will waft thee through the fields of air,
Open passage
And thou shalt light unwearied down
Open passage
In fair Ayodhyá's royal town.
Open passage
But yet if aught that I have done
Open passage
Has pleased thee well, O Raghu's son;
Open passage
If still thou carest for thy friend,
Open passage
Some little time in Lanká spend;
Open passage
There after toil of battle rest
Open passage
Within my halls an honoured guest.”
Open passage
Again the son of Raghu spake:
Open passage
“Thy life was perilled for my sake.
Open passage
Thy counsel gave me priceless aid:
Open passage
All honours have been richly paid.
