Open passage
Thus said Vaśishṭha, and again
Open passage
To Ráma spake in duteous strain:
Open passage
“All men the light of life who see
Open passage
With high respect should look on three:
Open passage
High honour ne'er must be denied
Open passage
To father, mother, holy guide.
Open passage
First to their sires their birth they owe,
Open passage
Nursed with maternal love they grow:
Open passage
Their holy guides fair knowledge teach:
Open passage
So men should love and honour each.
Open passage
Thy sire and thou have learned of me,
Open passage
The sacred guide of him and thee,
Open passage
And if my word thou wilt obey
Open passage
Thou still wilt keep the virtuous way.
Open passage
See, with the chiefs of every guild
Open passage
And all thy friends, this place is filled:
Open passage
All these, as duty bids, protect;
Open passage
So still the righteous path respect.
Open passage
O, for thine aged mother feel,
Open passage
Nor spurn the virtuous dame's appeal:
Open passage
Obey, O Prince, thy mother dear,
Open passage
And still to virtue's path adhere.
Open passage
Yield thou to Bharat's fond request,
Open passage
With earnest supplication pressed,
Open passage
So wilt thou to thyself be true,
Open passage
And faith and duty still pursue.”
Open passage
Thus by his saintly guide addressed
Open passage
With pleas in sweetest tones expressed,
Open passage
The lord of men in turn replied
Open passage
To wise Vaśishṭha by his side:
Open passage
“The fondest son's observance ne'er
Open passage
Repays the sire and mother's care:
Open passage
The constant love that food provides,
Open passage
And dress, and every need besides:
Open passage
Their pleasant words still soft and mild,
Open passage
Their nurture of the helpless child:
Open passage
The words which Daśaratha spake,
Open passage
My king and sire, I ne'er will break.”
Open passage
Then Bharat of the ample chest
Open passage
The wise Sumantra thus addressed;
