Open passage
The world’s renewed each moment, though we still remain
Open passage
In ignorance that permanence can change sustain.
Open passage
Life, like a river, ceaselessly, is still renewed;
Open passage
And apes persistency, in forms by change subdued,
Open passage
Through fleetness it puts on continuity’s shape;
Open passage
Like squib when ’tis revolved in dark by boy with tape.
Open passage
A flash of flame, through motion’s necessary speed,
Open passage
Appears unto our eyes a fire of size, indeed.
Open passage
Its length and its extension, through quickness of fact,
Open passage
Appear to be effects of God’s creative act.265
Open passage
A student of this mystery, a doctor of great skill,
Open passage
Is our Husāmu-’d-Dīn,163 whose praises books would fill.
Open passage
The lion, now enraged with hunger’s gnawing pain,
Open passage
Perceived the hare was coming, bounding o’er the plain.
Open passage
All carelessly, in confidence, he frisking came,
Open passage
The lion all the while growled, gnashed his teeth from shame.
Open passage
No consciousness of fault was visible, no fear;
Open passage
But confidence, sure sign his conscience he felt clear.
Open passage
When he’d reached hearing range, the lion him addressed
Open passage
In tones of wrath: “Thou demon, insolent, possessed!270
Open passage
Know I’m a lion; elephants my prey I make.
Open passage
The tigers, spotted pards, by me are caused to quake.
Open passage
A petty hare am not I, slighted thus to be,
Open passage
Or see my just dominion spurned by likes of thee.
Open passage
Cast off assumed prim innocence, awake to fact;
Open passage
Thou hear’st the lion’s roar; forget not thus the pact.”
Open passage
The hare replied: “Gramercy! Hear my poor excuse.
Open passage
Let me explain. Your Majesty will ne’er refuse.”
Open passage
The lion now: “Excuse? Thou basest of the base!
Open passage
Is this the time to pay thy court? A pretty case!275
Open passage
Unseasonably crowing cock art thou! Reprieved?
Open passage
Excuse from simpleton can never be received.
Open passage
A simpleton’s excuse is worse than was his fault.
Open passage
Excuse of ignorance were science to assault.
Open passage
Excuse from thee, thou hare, were quite devoid of sense.
Open passage
Take thou me not for hare; with me strive not to fence.”
Open passage
The hare to him: “O prince! Have pity on the weak!
Open passage
Lend ear unto the tales of them who justice seek.
Open passage
Thankoffering let it be for thy august estate.
Open passage
Poor supplicant like me, thou’lt not drive from thy gate.280
