The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto XLI. Ráma's Envoy.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Once more I warn thee, Rákshas King,
Open passage
This hour the Maithil lady bring,
Open passage
And, yielding while there yet is time,
Open passage
Seek, suppliant, pardon for the crime,
Open passage
Or I will leave beneath the sun
Open passage
No living Rákshas, no, not one.
Open passage
In vain from battle wilt thou fly,
Open passage
Or borne on pinions seek the sky;
Open passage
The hand of Ráma shall not spare;
Open passage
His fiery shaft shall smite thee there.’ ”
Open passage
He ceased: and Angad bowed his head;
Open passage
Thence like embodied flame he sped,
Open passage
And lighted from his airy road
Open passage
Within the Rákshas king's abode.
Open passage
There sate, the centre of a ring
Open passage
Of counsellors, the giant king.
Open passage
Swift through the circle Angad pressed,
Open passage
And spoke with fury in his breast:
Open passage
“Sent by the lord of Kośal's land,
Open passage
His envoy here, O King, I stand,
Open passage
Angad the son of Báli: fame
Open passage
Has haply taught thine ears my name.
Open passage
Thus in the words of Ráma I
Open passage
Am come to warn thee or defy:
Open passage
Come forth, and fighting in the van
Open passage
Display the spirit of a man.
Open passage
This arm shall slay thee, tyrant: all
Open passage
Thy nobles, kith and kin shall fall:
Open passage
And earth and heaven, from terror freed,
Open passage
Shall joy to see the oppressor bleed.
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ, when his foe is slain,
Open passage
Anointed king in peace shall reign.
Open passage
Once more I counsel thee: repent,
Open passage
Avoid the mortal punishment,
Open passage
With honour due the dame restore,
Open passage
And pardon for thy sin implore.”
Open passage
Loud rose the king's infuriate cry:
Open passage
“Seize, seize the Vánar, let him die.”
Open passage
Four of his band their lord obeyed,
Open passage
And eager hands on Angad laid.
