The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto XXVI. Alone With Sítá.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
In every word and deed refrain
Open passage
From aught that Bharat's soul may pain:
Open passage
He is Ayodhyá's king and mine,
Open passage
The head and lord of all our line.
Open passage
For those who serve and love them much
Open passage
With weariless endeavour, touch
Open passage
And win the gracious hearts of kings.
Open passage
While wrath from disobedience springs.
Open passage
Great monarchs from their presence send
Open passage
Their lawful sons who still offend,
Open passage
And welcome to the vacant place
Open passage
Good children of an alien race.
Open passage
Then, best of women, rest thou here,
Open passage
And Bharat's will with love revere.
Open passage
Obedient to thy king remain,
Open passage
And still thy vows of truth maintain.
Open passage
To the wide wood my steps I bend:
Open passage
Make thou thy dwelling here;
Open passage
See that thy conduct ne'er offend,
Open passage
And keep my words, my dear.”
