Canto IX. Rishyasring.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
In ships with wondrous art prepared
Open passage
Away the lovely women fared,
Open passage
And soon beneath the shade they stood
Open passage
Of the wild, lonely, dreary wood.
Open passage
And there the leafy cot they found
Open passage
Where dwelt the devotee,
Open passage
And looked with eager eyes around
Open passage
The hermit's son to see.
Open passage
Still, of Vibháṇdak sore afraid,
Open passage
They hid behind the creepers' shade.
Open passage
But when by careful watch they knew
Open passage
The elder saint was far from view,
Open passage
With bolder steps they ventured nigh
Open passage
To catch the youthful hermit's eye.
Open passage
Then all the damsels, blithe and gay,
Open passage
At various games began to play.
Open passage
They tossed the flying ball about
Open passage
With dance and song and merry shout,
Open passage
And moved, their scented tresses bound
Open passage
With wreaths, in mazy motion round.
Open passage
Some girls as if by love possessed,
Open passage
Sank to the earth in feigned unrest,
Open passage
Up starting quickly to pursue
Open passage
Their intermitted game anew.
Open passage
It was a lovely sight to see
Open passage
Those fair ones, as they played,
Open passage
While fragrant robes were floating free,
Open passage
And bracelets clashing in their glee
Open passage
A pleasant tinkling made.
Open passage
The anklet's chime, the Koïl's82 cry
Open passage
With music filled the place
Open passage
As 'twere some city in the sky
Open passage
Which heavenly minstrels grace.
Open passage
With each voluptuous art they strove
Open passage
To win the tenant of the grove,
Open passage
And with their graceful forms inspire
Open passage
His modest soul with soft desire.
Open passage
With arch of brow, with beck and smile,
Open passage
With every passion-waking wile
Open passage
Of glance and lotus hand,
