Open passage
“Come let us scale,” the hero cried,
Open passage
“This hill with various metals dyed.
Open passage
This night upon the breezy crest
Open passage
Sugríva, Lakshmaṇ, I, will rest,
Open passage
With sage Vibhishaṇ, faithful friend,
Open passage
His counsel and his lore to lend.
Open passage
From those tall peaks each eager eye
Open passage
The foeman's city shall espy,
Open passage
Who from the wood my darling stole
Open passage
And brought long anguish on my soul.”
Open passage
Thus spake the lord of men, and bent
Open passage
His footsteps to the steep ascent,
Open passage
And Lakshmaṇ, true in weal and woe,
Open passage
Next followed with his shafts and bow.
Open passage
Vibhishaṇ followed, next in place,
Open passage
The sovereign of the Vánar race,
Open passage
And hundreds of the forest kind
Open passage
Thronged with impetuous feet, behind.
Open passage
The chiefs in woods and mountains bred
Open passage
Fast followed to Suvela's head,
Open passage
And gazed on Lanká bright and fair
Open passage
As some gay city in the air.
Open passage
On glittering gates, on ramparts raised
Open passage
By giant hands, the chieftains gazed.
Open passage
They saw the mighty hosts that, skilled
Open passage
In arts of war, the city filled,
Open passage
And ramparts with new ramparts lined,
Open passage
The swarthy hosts that stood behind.
Open passage
With spirits burning for the fight
Open passage
They saw the giants from the height,
Open passage
And from a hundred throats rang out
Open passage
Defiance and the battle shout.
Open passage
Then sank the sun with dying flame,
Open passage
And soft the shades of twilight came,
Open passage
And the full moon's delicious light
Open passage
Was shed upon the tranquil night.
