Open passage
Resplendent, heavenly to behold,
Open passage
Adorned with wealth of gems and gold:
Open passage
E'en so a man in duty tried
Open passage
Draws near to meet his virtuous bride.
Open passage
He reached his golden seat o'erlaid
Open passage
With coverlet of rich brocade,
Open passage
There sat, in all the Vedas read,
Open passage
And called the messengers, and said:
Open passage
“Go forth, let Bráhman, Warrior, peer,
Open passage
And every captain gather here:
Open passage
Let all attentive hither throng:
Open passage
Go, hasten: we delay too long.
Open passage
Śatrughna, glorious Bharat bring,
Open passage
The noble children of the king,357
Open passage
Yudhájit358 and Sumantra, all
Open passage
The truthful and the virtuous call.”
Open passage
He ended: soon a mighty sound
Open passage
Of thickening tumult rose around,
Open passage
As to the hall they bent their course
Open passage
With car, and elephant, and horse,
Open passage
The people all with glad acclaim
Open passage
Welcomed Prince Bharat as he came:
Open passage
E'en as they loved their king to greet,
Open passage
Or as the Gods Lord Indra359 meet.
Open passage
The vast assembly shone as fair
Open passage
With Bharat's kingly face
Open passage
As Daśaratha's self were there
Open passage
It gleamed like some unruffled lake
Open passage
Where monsters huge of mould
Open passage
With many a snake their pastime take
Open passage
O'er shells, sand, gems, and gold.
