The Rámáyan of Válmíki, translated into English verse

Canto XL. Rávan's Speech.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
Cry out, “O Lakshmaṇ! Ah, mine own!”
Open passage
With voice resembling Ráma's tone.
Open passage
When Lakshmaṇ hears his brother's cry,
Open passage
Impelled by Sítá he will fly,
Open passage
Restless with eager love, to aid
Open passage
The hunter in the distant shade.
Open passage
When both her guards have left her side,
Open passage
Even as Indra, thousand-eyed,
Open passage
Clasps Śachí, will I bear away
Open passage
The Maithil dame an easy prey.
Open passage
When thou, my friend, this aid hast lent,
Open passage
Go where thou wilt and live content.
Open passage
True servant, faithful to thy vow,
Open passage
With half my realm I thee endow.
Open passage
Go forth, may luck thy way attend
Open passage
That leads thee to the happy end.
Open passage
I in my car will quickly be
Open passage
In Daṇḍak wood, and follow thee.
Open passage
So will I cheat this Ráma's eyes
Open passage
And win without a blow the prize;
Open passage
And safe return to Lanká's town
Open passage
With thee, my friend, this day shall crown.
Open passage
But if thou wilt not aid my will,
Open passage
My hand this day thy blood shall spill.
Open passage
Yea, thou must share the destined task,
Open passage
For force will take the help I ask.
Open passage
No bliss that rebel's life attends
Open passage
Whose stubborn will his lord offends.
Open passage
Thy life, if thou the task assay,
Open passage
Oppose me, and this very day
Open passage
Thou diest by this hand.
Open passage
Now ponder all that thou hast heard
Open passage
Within thy prudent breast:
Open passage
Reflect with care on every word,
Open passage
And do what seems the best.”
