Canto V. The League.

Project Gutenberg EPUB3 edition Valmiki and Griffith, Ralph T. H. (Ralph Thomas Hotchkin)
Open passage
From Rishyamúka's rugged side
Open passage
To Malaya's hill the Vánar hied,
Open passage
And to his royal chieftain there
Open passage
Announced the coming of the pair:
Open passage
“See, here with Lakshmaṇ Ráma stands
Open passage
Illustrious in a hundred lands.
Open passage
Whose valiant heart will never quail
Open passage
Although a thousand foes assail;
Open passage
King Daśaratha's son, the grace
Open passage
And glory of Ikshváku's race.
Open passage
Obedient to his father's will
Open passage
He cleaves to sacred duty still.
Open passage
With rites of royal pomp and pride
Open passage
His sire the Fire-God gratified;
Open passage
Ten hundred thousand kine he freed,
Open passage
And priests enriched with ample meed;
Open passage
And the broad land protected, famed
Open passage
For truthful lips and passions tamed.
Open passage
Through woman's guile his son has made
Open passage
His dwelling in the forest shade,
Open passage
Where, as he lived with every sense
Open passage
Subdued in hermit abstinence,
Open passage
Fierce Rávaṇ stole his wife, and he
Open passage
Is come a suppliant, lord, to thee.
Open passage
Now let all honour due be paid
Open passage
To these great chiefs who seek thine aid.”
Open passage
Thus spake the Vánar prince, and, stirred
Open passage
With friendly thoughts, Sugríva heard.
Open passage
The light of joy his face o'erspread,
Open passage
And thus to Raghu's son he said:
Open passage
“O Prince, in rules of duty trained,
Open passage
Caring for all with love unfeigned,
Open passage
Hanúmán's tongue has truly shown
Open passage
The virtues that are thine alone.
Open passage
My chiefest glory, gain, and bliss,
Open passage
O stranger Prince, I reckon this,
Open passage
That Raghu's son will condescend
Open passage
To seek the Vánar for his friend.
Open passage
If thou my true ally wouldst be
Open passage
Accept the pledge I offer thee,
